Mayor’s Message: When in Doubt, Reach Out: Facts, Access, and Local Government
By Mayor Janet Wampler - 24 April 2026 Over the past several weeks, many of you have reached out to City Hall with questions and concerns about the proposed Land Use Code adoption. Public engagement is not only welcome, but also essential to good local governance. I want to begin by sincerely thanking everyone who took the time to share their thoughts, attend meetings, or seek clarification. Your participation demonstrates how much our community cares about its future. At the same time, I want to acknowledge that much of the recent outreach was fueled by misinformation circulated through unofficial channels. Unfortunately, rumors can spread quickly, creating stress and anxiety where clarity should exist. When that happens, it can distract from productive dialogue and make community issues feel far more alarming than they truly are. One of the greatest strengths of local government is accessibility. Your elected officials are not distant figures; we are your neighbors. You see us at the grocery store, at community events, out on walks, and around town. We also make ourselves intentionally available through regularly scheduled office hours three times a week, public meetings twice a week, monthly town halls, and through widely shared phone numbers and email addresses. These avenues exist so that residents can ask questions directly, verify information, and engage in meaningful conversation before concerns turn into fear. City Council welcomes public participation at every stage of our decision‑making process. No ordinance, code update, or policy is adopted in isolation or without opportunities for public input. Land use decisions, in particular, affect how our community grows and evolves, which is exactly why they deserve careful review, thoughtful discussion, and fact‑based dialogue. I encourage all residents to pause before sharing information that may sound urgent or alarming. Ask where it came from. Check whether it originates from an official city source. When in doubt, reach out to us directly. We are always willing to discuss what is being proposed, why it is being considered, and how you can participate in shaping the outcome. Our community is strongest when we work together with openness, respect, and a shared commitment to the truth. City Council remains dedicated to listening, transparency, and collaboration. I invite you to stay engaged, stay informed, and most importantly, stay connected; because local government works best when residents and leaders move forward together. |
