Questions for WM Regarding Invoice Confusion in Ogden Valley City
27 June 2026
Can you explain the recent increase in WM invoices to Ogden Valley City residents?
WM (Waste Management) entered into a contract with Ogden Valley City on January 2, 2026, to provide waste collection for all residents. WM previously provided waste collection services to residents through Weber County. The contract with the new city was a rollover of the pre-existing contract with Weber County. The contract carried over the same provision for an annual CPI (Consumer Price Index, basically inflation adjustment specific to this market segment) increase which for 2026 is 4.8%, and it went into effect on April 1. (See https://www.bls.gov/news.release/archives/cpi_01132026.htm, Garbage and Trash Collections under All Items Less Food and Energy.) Because WM invoices for service in advance, the quarterly invoice cycle for April-June was mailed in late March and did not account for the CPI change yet. The quarterly invoice for July-September included the increased base rate for that billing period plus the increase from April-June ($3.12) that was not previously billed.
Is the increase due to a new city tax?
No. The increase is due to a contract term that was rolled over from the prior Weber County contract.
What was the increase for a typical household?
With a 4.8% CPI adjustment, the base rate for a household with one trash cart increased by $3.12 per quarter to $68.49 (including the Ogden Valley City administrative fee). So the July-September invoice reflected the $3.12 increase from April-June in addition to the $68.49 rate for July-September. The next invoice will reflect a $68.49 charge.
Is there anything else residents should know?
WM of Utah is delighted to continue to provide safe, reliable waste collection services to Ogden Valley City residents. We appreciate the opportunity to keep the community safer, cleaner and greener.
