Utah Returns to Stage 1 Fire Restrictions After Recent Storms
By The Ogden Valley News Staff – 5 September 2026 Due to moderated fire danger indices and improved weather conditions in Northern Utah, the State of Utah and the Weber Fire District have rescinded Stage 2 fire restrictions effective at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2026. This rescindment applies to all unincorporated private and state lands within Box Elder, Cache, Rich, and Weber counties. While these orders do not generally affect private lands within incorporated city limits, Ogden Valley City has made an exception and explicitly adopted the Stage 1 restrictions. Despite this rollback, fire officials warn that fire danger is expected to remain high as the summer progresses, and Stage 1 fire restrictions remain strictly in effect. These Stage 1 restrictions were originally implemented on June 19, 2026. Under Stage 1, open fires are prohibited except in approved fire rings at developed campgrounds or in permanently constructed fire pits at private residences, provided both have a pressurized running water system. Smoking is strictly limited to enclosed vehicles, trailers, buildings, or paved areas that are completely free from dry vegetation. Furthermore, the ongoing restrictions completely prohibit the discharge of fireworks, tracer ammunition, or exploding targets. Residents are also barred from cutting, welding, or grinding metal in areas with dry vegetation, and they may not operate motorcycles, chainsaws, ATVs, or other small internal combustion engines without an approved and working spark arrestor. Violations of these state laws will be enforced by county law enforcement and are punishable by up to six months in jail alongside fines of up to $1,000. |
