Back Country Horsemen Building North Fork Park Equestrian Shelter

It’s happening! The North Fork Park Equestrian Shelter is under construction. This project was inspired by Brad Cragun, Weber County Parks and Recreation Director. Back Country Horsemen, Wasatch Front Chapter (BCHU-WF), had requested the opportunity to complete a project at North Fork Park. After a few meetings and some brainstorming, it was decided to build a 70 X 70 ft. pole barn over the corrals in “B Loop”, and the North Fork Park Equestrian Shelter idea became a dream.

With the support of RAMP, Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Community Foundation of Ogden Valley (CFOV). BCHU-WF was able to make this dream become a reality and this welcomed improvement began construction on July 20, 2026

The North Fork Park Equestrian Shelter will provide much needed shade for equine visiting the park. The structure will also help with erosion control and minimize snow load damage the existing corrals have experienced. Once the shelter is complete, road base will be installed on a newly created drive around the shelter. Large rocks and obstacles have been removed to accommodate living quarter trailers. And finally, new horse panels will be installed, creating 15 corrals. The park is considering making the corrals reservable starting Summer 2027.

There will also be opportunities to contribute to the project with scheduled volunteer workdays. BCHU-WF is tentatively planning a Grand Opening of the new facility in mid-September, pending weather and construction timelines.

About Back Country Horsemen of Utah

The purpose of Back Country Horsemen of Utah is to perpetuate common sense use and enjoyment of horses in the back country and wilderness areas; to work to ensure that public lands remain open to recreational stock use; to assist the various government and private agencies in maintenance and management of this resource; and to educate, encourage, and solicit active participation in the wise and sustainable use of the back country resource by horsemen and the general public that is commensurate with our heritage.

To that end, we donate many hours each year to clearing existing trails of overgrowth, deadfall, and debris; mapping trails; and maintaining trails and trailheads. At the request of the Forest Service, BCHU-WF is actively clearing, marking, and tromping in multiple trails in the Monte Cristo area. North Fork Park trails are largely maintained in the summer by our local chapter, Wasatch Front, and in the winter by Ogden Nordic.

We enjoy riding the trails and seeing others use the trails, knowing we had a hand in keeping them open and maintained for all to enjoy. We also enjoy partnering with other user groups such as USFS, Weber County Sheriff's Posse, and Trails Foundation of Northern Utah (TFNU) to accomplish bigger projects.

Our parent organization, Back Country Horsemen of America, was founded in 1973 in Montana, by a group of concerned horsemen. BCHA currently has active chapters in 32 states with over 13,000 members nationwide. We are looking forward to a great year of service and riding!
