Huntsville Secures $1.698 Million for Drinking Water System Improvements Following 2024 Crisis

12 January 2026

The Town of Huntsville has received approval from the Utah Drinking Water Board for a $1,698,000 funding package to upgrade the Town’s aging drinking water infrastructure. The package includes $510,000 in principal forgiveness and a $1,188,000 loan at 1.5% interest over 30 years.

This funding follows a major water crisis in December 2024, when an elusive leak left residents without water for an extended period. The incident revealed that key portions of the system were deteriorating much sooner than anticipated.

“Last year’s crisis was a wake-up call,” said Mayor Richard Sorensen. “We learned that our system had vulnerabilities that needed immediate attention. Over the past year we have made tough decisions, including increasing water rates to rebuild our emergency reserves. This funding now allows us to move forward with a long-term fix.”

The project includes replacing a significant section of the main water line and adding system redundancies to improve reliability. Some redundancy improvements will begin immediately. Full construction on the new line is anticipated to begin in early spring 2026.
