AI for Everybody: How the Library is Helping Our Community

As artificial intelligence transforms education, business, healthcare, and everyday life, the Weber County Library System is helping ensure these powerful tools remain accessible to everyone. Through the deployment of BrAIny AI, a locally controlled artificial intelligence platform, the library is expanding public access to emerging technology while protecting privacy and supporting lifelong learning.
Funded in part through a state grant, BrAIny AI provides residents with free access to advanced AI tools in a trusted public setting. Unlike many commercial platforms that rely on advertising, extensive data collection, or pay-per-use pricing, BrAIny offers a privacyconscious environment where users can explore an artificial intelligence “green space” without commercial influence.
The platform supports research, writing, creativity, skill development, and problemsolving for students, job seekers, entrepreneurs, and lifelong learners. By providing access through the library, residents who may not otherwise be able to afford AI technology can gain experience with tools increasingly used in schools, workplaces, and businesses.
BrAIny AI also reflects responsible stewardship of public resources. Its predictable subscription model helps control costs while ensuring broad community access. In addition, its local architecture reduces dependence on large cloud-based systems, supporting sustainability and reliable service.
“Public libraries have always helped communities navigate transformational technologies,” said Library Director Lynnda Wangsgard. “From books and computers to internet access and digital media, our role is to ensure that learning opportunities remain available to everyone. Artificial intelligence is the next step in that mission.”
Modern libraries have evolved far beyond their traditional role as repositories of books. They serve as community learning centers where people come to create, collaborate, and build new skills. Alongside makerspaces, digital media labs, and technology training programs, artificial intelligence is becoming an important resource for education, workforce development, and innovation.
BrAIny AI is designed to be accessible to everyone. Community members need only an email address to create an account and begin using the on-site service. For those who do not already have an email account, library staff are available to help establish one, ensuring that all residents have an opportunity to explore and benefit from artificial intelligence technologies. This low-barrier approach reflects the library’s commitment to digital inclusion, privacy, intellectual freedom, and equitable access to information.
