Huntsville Launches “Adopt-a-Hydrant” Program for America 250 Celebration
23 May 2026 As communities across the nation prepare to celebrate America’s 250th birthday in 2026, the Town of Huntsville is inviting residents throughout Ogden Valley to help create a colorful and patriotic community art project through its new “Adopt-a-Hydrant” program. The project encourages families, businesses, scout troops, churches, schools, artists, and community groups to adopt and paint fire hydrants throughout town using patriotic Americana themes and traditional red, white, and blue colors. Participants will begin painting in June, with judging scheduled for July 2 and awards presented during Huntsville’s July 4 patriotic celebration program. Mayor Richard Sorensen said the idea was inspired in part by Huntsville’s own Bicentennial history. “In 1976, during America’s Bicentennial celebration, then-Huntsville Mayor Sterling Wood enlisted some of the local youth to do a similar fire hydrant painting program,” Sorensen said. “Mayor Wood was very influential during my formative years, and his July 4 celebrations were always the highlight of the year.” Sorensen said the Town hopes the project will bring residents together while creating a fun and memorable community tradition. “We are hopeful families, youth groups, professional artists, and novice student artists from throughout Ogden Valley will join us in beautifying our town while we celebrate America’s 250th birthday,” Sorensen said. “This is intended to be a fun, family-friendly project that celebrates patriotism, creativity, and community involvement.” Hydrants will feature Americana-inspired themes including stars and stripes, historic imagery, eagles, fireworks, military tributes, and small-town patriotic artwork. The Town will provide approved paint and basic supplies through a community checkout system at Huntsville Town Hall. Painting is scheduled to take place from June 1 through June 30, with touch-ups and photography occurring during the first few days of July. Contest categories will include Mayor’s Choice, Fire Chief’s Choice, Most Patriotic, Best Historical Theme, Best Family Entry, Best Youth Entry, and People’s Choice Award. The Town is also working to partner with local artists, retired art teachers, and community arts organizations to help mentor participants and coordinate the effort. Residents interested in participating are encouraged to visit HuntsvilleUtah.gov/hydrants for complete program details, inspiration graphics, project guidelines, and access to the online signup form. The Town hopes the project will help create a memorable America 250 celebration while bringing neighbors, families, artists, and community groups together in a fun and creative way.
