2026 General Session of the 67th Legislature – Week 7: Final Progress Report By Representative Jason Kyle - 15 March 2026
Editor's Note: The following update is adapted from Representative Jason Kyle’s weekly legislative newsletter to constituents of House District 8. SALT LAKE CITY – The 2026 General Legislative Session has come to a close with a final focus on affordability and government accountability. Efforts this year centered on providing financial relief to Utahns through tax reductions and red tape removal, alongside long-term investments in education, water resources, and judicial transparency. While the 45-day session has concluded, the public can continue to review all passed legislation at le.utah.gov.
Supporting Students and Workforce Readiness The Legislature secured a 5.9% total increase in education funding this session, totaling over $142 million in new investments. Beyond base funding, the state is prioritizing career-connected learning to bridge the gap between graduation and the workforce. Key investments include over $72 million for strategic innovation, featuring $35 million for professional education experience centers and nearly $4 million for student credential accounts. These initiatives are designed to ensure students gain the specific skills and certifications required for Utah's current job market.
Family-First Economic Policies A primary objective this session was the passage of a family-first agenda intended to ease the pressure of rising costs. Significant economic measures passed include:
Income Tax Reduction: Lowering the state income tax to 4.45%.
Child Tax Credit Expansion: Increasing the reach of the credit for Utah parents.
Gas Tax Reduction: Slashing the state gas tax by 15% to provide immediate relief at the pump.
In addition to direct tax relief, the Legislature allocated $4 million for youth mental health and increased funding for literacy and local parks. New measures also aim to hold tobacco companies accountable, with revenue reinvested into local community services.
The Interim Process: Preparing for 2027 Although the general session has ended, the work of the Legislature continues through the interim process beginning in May. Lawmakers will meet monthly in specialized committees to study complex issues and hear from experts and stakeholders. This phase serves as the groundwork for the 2027 General Session and provides an opportunity for citizens to share concerns and perspectives before new bills are drafted for the following year.
