District 8 Representative Jason Kyle
2026 General Session of the 67th Legislature – Week 5
By Representative Jason Kyle - 28 February 2026

Editor's Note: The following update is adapted from Representative Jason Kyle’s weekly legislative newsletter to constituents of House District 8.

SALT LAKE CITY – The fifth week of the 2026 General Legislative Session on Capitol Hill focused on strengthening Utah’s water future, supporting families, and enhancing public safety. As the session moves toward its final weeks, lawmakers are refining policies through committee meetings and floor debates. Constituents can continue to follow daily schedules and livestream proceedings at le.utah.gov.

Keeping Your Data Private: H.B. 261
This week, H.B. 261 passed the House of Representatives and has moved to the Senate for consideration. Sponsored by Representative Kyle, this legislation is designed to strengthen 4th Amendment protections for Utahns by ensuring electronic records remain private. The bill seeks to provide confidence that electronic privacy is protected as modern technology continues to evolve.

Supporting Utah Families
Legislative efforts this session include measures aimed at providing relief to working parents. Proposals involve expanding the child tax credit to allow more families to qualify and retain more of their earnings. Additionally, the Legislature is working to strengthen paid leave policies by extending postpartum recovery leave, adoption leave, and foster leave to provide greater stability for Utah families.

Smart Technology and Classroom Standards
The House passed H.B. 273 (Classroom Technology Amendments) with bipartisan support, establishing age-appropriate standards for the use of technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in schools. The legislation focuses on reducing screen time in early grades and increasing transparency for parents regarding classroom technology. Furthermore, the bill protects student privacy, ensures AI supports rather than replaces traditional teaching, and strengthens computer science education through safe, supervised exploration of emerging technologies.

Supporting First Responders
The House passed H.B. 416 (Firefighter Cancer Amendments), which builds upon previous cancer screening legislation. This bill creates a dedicated Firefighter Cancer Benefit Trust Fund to provide benefits to firefighters who develop job-related cancers. The fund is designed to be self-sustaining, utilizing existing funding and oversight from a board of trustees to support emergency personnel and their families.
