2026 General Session of the 67th Legislature – Week 1
By Representative Jason Kyle - 10 February 2026

Editor's Note: The following update is adapted from Representative Jason Kyle’s weekly legislative newsletter to constituents of House District 8.

SALT LAKE CITY – The 2026 General Legislative Session is officially underway at the Utah State Capitol. With a 45-day calendar—the shortest in the nation—Representative Jason Kyle is back in the House representing the Ogden Valley.

The focus of this session remains on practical solutions intended to strengthen the community and protect shared values. Constituents are encouraged to stay engaged by watching committee meetings and floor debates live, viewing daily agendas, and tracking legislation at le.utah.gov.

Reducing Financial Burdens for Utahns
Action was taken this week on H.B. 47 (Vehicle Registration and Insurance Amendments), which passed the House of Representatives and was sent to the Senate for consideration. Sponsored by Representative Kyle, the bill aims to reduce financial burdens associated with maintaining liability insurance on unused vehicles. Under current law, all registered vehicles must carry liability insurance even if they are not driven. H.B. 47 proposes to update this provision to only require insurance for vehicles that are actively driven, potentially saving costs for owners of seasonal vehicles.
The North Capitol Building: Built for Utahns
This week also marked the opening of the new North Capitol Building. This facility expands public access to Capitol Hill and includes office space, a conference center, and parking. It also provides secure storage for Utah’s historical treasures and will serve as the future home of the Museum of Utah. The project is intended to preserve state history while improving the experience for citizens participating in their government.

Fair Pricing and Consumer Protections
Legislation is moving forward to help families avoid hidden fees. H.B. 29 (Unfair and Deceptive Pricing Amendments) would require businesses to clearly display the total price of a product or service, ensuring all mandatory fees are fully disclosed. The bill grants the Division of Consumer Protection authority to enforce these rules and impose fines on violators to ensure transparent pricing for consumers.
